Funded by the Health Foundation in London, I spent a week with the ‘MaiKhanda’ project in southern Malawi. And what a week it was! The charity’s aim is to reduce maternal death rates in Malawian hospitals. My job was to show this off with documentary photography. The doctors, nurses, midwives and hospital staff I met became my subjects. Some maternity wards were in city hospitals. Others were very much field hospitals. The experience was incredible and very humbling. I returned to the UK with eyes open! The series below was awarded an IPA special mention.
